RAB LED Wall Pack Buying Guide

RAB LED Wall Pack Buying Guide

Wall packs are the workhorse of building-perimeter, entry, and security lighting. RAB Lighting builds several LED wall pack families that have moved almost entirely to field-adjustable wattage and color temperature, so a single fixture can cover what used to take several SKUs. This guide walks through how to spec the right RAB wall pack and which families fit which jobs. Every spec below is verified against RAB's own product pages and ordering data.

How to choose a RAB LED wall pack

Wattage and lumens

Match output to the area and mounting height, not just the wattage of the old fixture. RAB's current wall pack lines are designed to replace traditional metal halide wall packs while staying in budget, and most are field-adjustable across three wattages, so you can dial output up or down after install.

Verified output reference points from RAB's data:

  • WP2XFU29 (small, 15/20/29W selectable): 2,216–4,350 lumens depending on the selected wattage.
  • WP3XFU50 (30/40/50W selectable): 4,305–7,695 lumens.
  • WP3XFU tiers (up to 100/130/150W selectable): scale well above the WP2 range for tall building faces, parking walls, and loading docks (confirm the exact lumen value for your selected catalog number on RAB's spec sheet).

Rule of thumb: entry doors and small perimeters lean toward the smaller wattage tiers; parking-area walls, loading docks, and tall building faces need the higher-output WP2/WP3 ranges.

Color temperature (CCT)

RAB's adjustable wall packs ship with a field-selectable CCT switch offering 3000K, 4000K, and 5000K in one fixture. 3000K is warmer (entries, hospitality-adjacent areas), 4000K is the common neutral commercial choice, and 5000K is the cool, high-contrast look most often spec'd for security and parking. Because it's switch-selectable, you don't have to commit at order time.

Photocell / dusk-to-dawn

Most RAB wall pack families include an integrated photocell for automatic dusk-to-dawn operation. On the SLIM17 it comes standard; on the WP123 FA and WP123 XFU families the integrated photocell is selectable (can be turned on or off) so you can use the fixture with a separate control system when needed. Photocells are the simplest way to cut runtime and energy on perimeter and security lighting.

Mounting

RAB wall packs are surface wall-mount fixtures. The SLIM17 offers hinged wiring access and conduit entries on the back, sides, top, and bottom, which simplifies retrofit wiring. Confirm the back-box footprint covers the existing fixture's wall opening — the WP123 family is specifically sized to cover the footprint of most traditional metal halide wall packs.

Full-cutoff, dark-sky, and DLC

  • Full cutoff / dark sky: The SLIM17 Field-Adjustable has a fully adjustable cutoff shield, from full cutoff up to 90° in 15° increments. RAB states that when mounted and kept at its 0° setting, the SLIM17 FA is a full-cutoff wall pack and is Dark Sky friendly. This matters where light-trespass or dark-sky ordinances apply.
  • DLC: RAB offers DLC Premium listed models across the SLIM17, WP123 FA, and WP123 XFU families. DLC Premium qualification is what unlocks most utility rebates, so confirm the exact catalog number is DLC-listed before promising a rebate. Use RAB's Utility Rebate Finder, or ask us to confirm the rebate-eligible SKU.
  • Other ratings (verified): IP65 rated, 80+ CRI, 0-10V dimming, and a 100,000-hour rated LED life with a 5-year limited warranty across these families.

FAQ

What's the difference between WP123 FA and WP123 XFU?
Both are field-adjustable. The WP123 FA gives you selectable CCT (3000/4000/5000K) and an on/off photocell. The WP123 XFU adds selectable wattage on top of that — three wattages, three color temperatures, and an on/off photocell in a single fixture (RAB calls it 18 SKUs in one).
Do RAB wall packs come with a photocell?
Yes. The SLIM17 includes an integrated photocell standard, and the WP123 FA and WP123 XFU families include an integrated, selectable photocell you can switch on or off. This gives you automatic dusk-to-dawn operation.
Which RAB wall pack is dark-sky / full-cutoff?
The SLIM17 Field-Adjustable is a full-cutoff, Dark Sky friendly fixture when kept at its 0° cutoff setting, and its shield adjusts up to 90° in 15° increments to aim the light. Choose it for sites with light-trespass or dark-sky requirements.
Are RAB LED wall packs DLC listed for rebates?
RAB offers DLC Premium listed models across the SLIM17, WP123 FA, and WP123 XFU families. DLC Premium is what most utility rebate programs require. Always confirm the specific catalog number is DLC-listed before counting on a rebate — we can verify the rebate-eligible SKU for you.
What CCT should I choose for security or parking lighting?
5000K is the most common choice for security and parking because of its cool, high-contrast appearance; 4000K is the typical neutral commercial pick; 3000K suits warmer entry and hospitality-adjacent areas. RAB's adjustable wall packs let you switch between all three on the fixture, so you can decide in the field.
How many lumens do I need?
It depends on mounting height and the area covered, not just the old fixture's wattage. As a reference, RAB's smaller WP2XFU29 delivers 2,216–4,350 lumens across its selectable wattages, while the larger WP3XFU tiers deliver substantially more for parking walls and tall building faces. Send us the layout or fixture schedule and we'll size it.
