Lutron RR-PROC3-KIT: The RadioRA 3 All-in-One Processor Kit, Explained

The Lutron RR-PROC3-KIT is the boxed starter version of the RadioRA 3 processor: the processor itself plus everything needed to power it and set it on a shelf, in one part number. If a RadioRA 3 project is on your schedule and the first line item reads RR-PROC3-KIT, this is what shows up and what it does.

What's in the box

Per Lutron's specification submittal, the RR-PROC3-KIT includes:

  • RR-PROC3 processor, the brain of a RadioRA 3 system
  • PoE injector (L-POEI-BL) with region-specific plugs
  • 6 ft down-angle Ethernet cable for the processor in its shelf mount
  • 3 ft Ethernet cable for the run to the router
  • Shelf-mount adapter (L-SMNT-WH)

The processor has no separate power supply. It is powered over its Ethernet connection: plug the injector into the wall, run Ethernet through it to the processor, and the same cable carries data and power.

RR-PROC3-KIT vs RR-PROC3-KIT1 vs RR-PROC3-CW

Three catalog numbers, one processor. The difference is mounting hardware:

  • RR-PROC3-KIT: processor, PoE injector, both Ethernet cables, and the shelf-mount adapter. The pick for a shelf, cabinet, or equipment closet.
  • RR-PROC3-KIT1: same kit without the shelf-mount adapter.
  • RR-PROC3-CW: processor with recess-mount and junction-box-mount adapters instead, for flush wall installation. Note it does not include the PoE injector, so plan on a PoE switch or add an L-POEI-BL.

If you are unsure, the KIT is the safe default: it works out of the box with any home network and the adapters are also sold separately as replacement parts.

Key specs (verified against Lutron's spec submittal)

  • Capacity per processor: up to 100 Clear Connect Type X devices (Sunnata dimmers, switches, keypads) and 95 Clear Connect Type A devices (Maestro dimmers, Pico remotes, seeTouch keypads, Sivoia QS wireless shades, Radio Powr Savr sensors).
  • System scale: up to 4 processors in one RadioRA 3 system, supporting up to 200 Type X devices system-wide. Full per-device and system limits are in our RR-PROC3 processor deep-dive.
  • Power: PoE per IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at, or 802.3bt. The included injector is 802.3af (15.4W max); the processor itself is a Class 1 device drawing 1.5W typical, 4.0W max.
  • Wiring: Cat5e minimum, up to 328 ft from router to processor including the injector. PoE wiring must stay inside the building.
  • RF range, Type X (2.4 GHz): all Sunnata-family devices within a 75 ft radius of the processor, with at least two devices within 25 ft of it.
  • RF range, Type A (434 MHz): each device within 30 ft of the processor or a repeater; up to 4 wireless repeaters can be added, spanned up to 60 ft apart. Repeaters extend Type A range only, not Type X.
  • Resilience: local device operation continues if the internet goes down, the timeclock is retained on internal battery backup, and the system returns to its previous state after a power failure.
  • Environment: indoor use only, 32°F to 104°F.
  • Listings: cULus listed, FCC Class B.

What the processor actually does

RadioRA 3 devices talk to the processor, and the processor runs the show: scenes, timeclock schedules of daily events, app control from anywhere, and integrations. It is programmed by a Lutron-certified installer through the Lutron Designer PC tool along with the Lutron app, and it exposes Lutron's LEAP API for professional A/V and security integration. Out of the box it works with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant, Sonos, and Ring.

Because RadioRA 3 speaks both Clear Connect radio types, one RR-PROC3-KIT can run new Sunnata keypads and dimmers alongside RadioRA 2-era Maestro dimmers, Picos, and Sivoia QS shades. That backward compatibility is the practical reason RA3 took over the upgrade market; see our RadioRA 3 vs RadioRA 2 comparison for the migration details, or RadioRA 3 vs Caseta if you are deciding between platforms.

Who should order the kit

Integrators and electricians starting any new RadioRA 3 job: the kit is the standard first line of the parts list, followed by the Sunnata devices and Picos for each room. It suits homes and light commercial spaces up to the 75 ft Type X radius per processor, with multi-processor designs covering larger footprints. If the plan calls for a rack or structured-wiring panel, note the shelf mount's low profile is why the down-angle Ethernet cable is included; a standard boot may not fit.

FAQ

What is included in the Lutron RR-PROC3-KIT?
The RadioRA 3 processor (RR-PROC3), a PoE injector (L-POEI-BL), a 6 ft down-angle Ethernet cable, a 3 ft Ethernet cable, and a shelf-mount adapter (L-SMNT-WH), per Lutron's specification submittal.
What is the difference between RR-PROC3-KIT and RR-PROC3-CW?
Same processor, different mounting. The KIT includes the PoE injector, cables, and a shelf-mount adapter. The CW version includes recess-mount and junction-box-mount adapters for flush wall installation and does not include the PoE injector.
How many devices does the RR-PROC3-KIT support?
Up to 100 Clear Connect Type X devices (Sunnata family) and 95 Clear Connect Type A devices (Maestro, Pico, seeTouch, wireless shades) per processor. A full RadioRA 3 system supports up to 4 processors and up to 200 Type X devices.
Does the RR-PROC3-KIT need a Lutron hub or bridge?
No. The processor is the hub. It connects to your router over Ethernet, is powered by the included PoE injector, and local control keeps working even if the internet connection drops.
Does the RadioRA 3 processor work with Alexa, HomeKit, and Google?
Yes. Lutron lists support for Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant, Sonos, and Ring, plus the LEAP API for professional A/V and security integrations.
Is RadioRA 3 backward compatible with RadioRA 2 devices?
Largely, yes. The processor supports RadioRA 2-era Maestro dimmers, switches, and fan controls, seeTouch keypads, Picos, and Sivoia QS wireless shades. Lutron notes exceptions including RadioRA 2 GRAFIK Eye, Wallbox Power Modules, seeTemp, and the HVAC controller, which are not compatible.

Specifications can change. Confirm current kit contents and device limits against Lutron's official spec submittal before finalizing a design.
