Lutron RadioRA 3 vs RadioRA 2: Which System Is Right for Your Project?

If you are speccing a whole-home lighting control system, you have likely landed on Lutron's professional RadioRA line. RadioRA 3 is Lutron's current-generation professional system, while RadioRA 2 is the prior generation it replaced. Both are professional-grade, but they differ in scale, coverage, and hardware. Here is a clear, source-verified comparison so you can pick the right platform.

RadioRA 3

RadioRA 3 is Lutron's current professional-grade residential lighting control system. Per Lutron, it supports up to 400 devices — 200 ClearConnect Type A devices plus 200 ClearConnect Type X devices — across up to 4 processors, with up to 4 repeaters per processor. RF coverage is rated at ≤ 7,500 sq. ft., making it a strong fit for larger homes.

On the hardware side, RadioRA 3 supports Sunnata RF paddle-style keypads and dimmers, plus Maestro RF and SeeTouch push-button keypads, along with RF modules. Programming is done by a qualified installer using Lutron Designer PC software, with the Lutron app used to activate ClearConnect Type X devices. RadioRA 3 can only be programmed by a qualified installer.

RadioRA 2

RadioRA 2 is the prior-generation professional system that RadioRA 3 replaced. Per Lutron documentation, RadioRA 2 is scalable from 2 to 200 devices. Its RF architecture is built around a Main Repeater plus up to four Auxiliary Repeaters (five repeaters total). RF range between repeaters is 60 ft, with roughly 2,500 sq. ft. of coverage per repeater, and all repeaters must be within 60 ft of another repeater.

RadioRA 2 uses SeeTouch keypads and Pico controls for points of control. The full RadioRA 2 system is programmed with Lutron's RadioRA 2 PC software, and PC programming requires installer certification.

Worth noting: Lutron's current "Which Lutron Residential System is Best for Me" support article lists only three residential systems — Caséta, RadioRA 3, and Homeworks QSX. RadioRA 2 is no longer part of that current lineup, and its software now lives in Lutron's RadioRA 3 support section as an archive. That is a clear signal RadioRA 2 has been superseded by RadioRA 3 for new projects.

How to choose

  • Choose RadioRA 3 for new installations, larger homes (up to ~7,500 sq. ft.), higher device counts (up to 400 devices), and access to current Sunnata keypads and the latest ClearConnect Type X devices. This is the platform Lutron is actively positioning for new professional residential projects.
  • Choose RadioRA 2 primarily when you are servicing, expanding, or matching an existing RadioRA 2 install (up to 200 devices) and want to keep hardware and programming consistent with what is already in place.

For most new builds and major remodels, RadioRA 3 is the forward-looking choice. For existing RadioRA 2 homes, staying on RadioRA 2 can make sense to preserve compatibility.
