Lutron RadioRA 3 is the company's professionally installed, whole-home wireless lighting control platform — the step up from the do-it-yourself Caseta system. If you are specifying lighting control for a larger home, a renovation, or a project that ties lights and shades together, this guide explains how RadioRA 3 works, what it can scale to, and how to choose the right components.
What RadioRA 3 is built for
RadioRA 3 controls dimmers, switches, keypads, shades, and sensors from a single system, operated through wall keypads, the Lutron app, and voice assistants. Unlike DIY systems, a RadioRA 3 project is programmed by a Lutron-certified installer, which is what makes advanced scenes, keypad engraving, and whole-home coordination reliable.
System capacity and architecture
A single RadioRA 3 processor supports up to 100 Clear Connect Type X (Sunnata RF) devices plus up to 95 Clear Connect Type A (RadioRA 2 / RA2 Select) devices, with up to four Auxiliary Repeaters per processor. Sunnata companion dimmers and switches do not count toward the 100-device limit. For larger projects, a RadioRA 3 system scales to up to 4 processors — up to 200 Type X and 190 Type A devices in total (with up to 8 Auxiliary Repeaters across the system).
Clear Connect Type X vs. Type A
- Clear Connect Type X (Sunnata RF) communicates on 2.4 GHz in a self-healing mesh, so it generally does not need repeaters to extend range.
- Clear Connect Type A (RadioRA 2, RA2 Select) communicates near 434 MHz and uses wireless repeaters for coverage.
- RadioRA 3 works with both, so existing RA2 and RA2 Select devices can often be carried into a new RadioRA 3 system.
Choosing components
A typical RadioRA 3 design starts with the processor, then adds Sunnata RF dimmers and switches, keypads, Pico remotes, occupancy and daylight sensors, and Lutron shades. Match dimmers to your load types (LED, ELV, MLV, incandescent) and plan keypad locations early. Browse the full Lutron collection and lighting controls to see compatible devices.
