LED Flicker and Dimmer Buzz: Causes and Fixes

Flickering and buzzing are the two most common complaints after an LED retrofit, and they usually come from the same root cause: the dimmer and the LED driver do not get along. The good news is that these are compatibility problems, not defective lights, and most are fixable without replacing the fixtures. This guide explains what is actually happening and walks through the fixes in the order a pro would try them.

Why LEDs flicker on a dimmer

Old incandescent bulbs were simple resistive loads that dimmed smoothly no matter what. An LED is different: behind the diodes sits a driver, a small power supply that has to stay running to produce light. Trouble starts when the dimmer chops the AC waveform in a way the driver cannot handle.

Three mechanisms cause most flicker:

  • Driver and dimmer incompatibility. When the chopped waveform drops below the voltage the driver needs, the driver shuts down and restarts many times a second. You see that rapid stop-start as a strobe or flicker, worst at low brightness (often below 10 to 20 percent).
  • Not enough load on the dimmer. Many legacy dimmers need a minimum load, commonly around 40 watts or more, to operate correctly. A circuit of LEDs pulling only 5 to 10 watts each may never reach that floor, so the dimmer behaves erratically and the lights flicker, again worst near the bottom of the range.
  • Wrong dimming technology. A leading-edge (forward phase) dimmer designed for incandescent or magnetic loads often mismatches modern LED drivers, which prefer trailing-edge (reverse phase) dimming.

Why the dimmer buzzes

The hum or buzz is a physical vibration. When a driver is fed the sharp, abrupt voltage steps of a leading-edge dimmer, the copper coils and other components inside the driver or dimmer vibrate under the electrical stress. That vibration is audible as coil whine. It tends to travel: you may hear it from the fixture, the dimmer, or a transformer on the circuit.

Leading edge vs trailing edge

This distinction fixes more LED problems than any other single thing, so it is worth understanding.

  • Leading-edge (forward phase): cuts the front of each AC half-cycle. Built for incandescent and magnetic low-voltage loads. Higher minimum load. More likely to buzz and flicker with LEDs.
  • Trailing-edge (reverse phase): cuts the back of each half-cycle, delivering a cleaner signal to electronic drivers. Lower minimum load, often just a few watts. Generally the better match for LED.

If you are dimming LEDs and having trouble, moving to a trailing-edge or purpose-built LED dimmer is usually step one.

The fixes, in order

Work through these from cheapest to most involved:

  1. Use an LED-rated dimmer and check the compatibility list. This solves the majority of cases.   2. Adjust the low-end trim. Most quality LED dimmers have a low-end (minimum) trim setting. Raising it keeps the driver above its dropout voltage so it stays lit at the bottom of the range instead of flickering. This is often the fix when everything is compatible but the lights flutter only when dimmed low.
  3. Meet the minimum load. If a small LED load is below the dimmer's minimum, either add fixtures to the circuit or install the manufacturer's bypass/load accessory (sometimes called a capacitor or load bypass) to give the dimmer something to see.
  4. Check the wiring. Loose connections, an overloaded circuit, or a missing or shared neutral can cause flicker on their own.   5. Consider the driver and the fixture. Very low-cost fixtures with basic drivers can flicker on almost any dimmer. On a project where dimming quality matters, spec fixtures with reputable, dimmable drivers rather than trying to rescue bargain fixtures with a better dimmer.

Flicker with no dimmer involved

If lights flicker on a plain switch with no dimmer, the usual suspects are a loose connection, voltage fluctuation on the circuit (a large motor load kicking on, for example), or a driver at end of life. These are wiring and electrical issues, not dimming compatibility, and should be checked by an electrician.

For commercial projects: 0-10V and DALI

Phase-cut dimming (leading and trailing edge) is a residential and light-commercial approach. On commercial jobs, smoother and more reliable dimming usually comes from a dedicated control protocol. 0-10V is the common commercial standard, with DALI used for addressable, fixture-level control.
