Lutron Caséta vs Maestro: Which Should You Choose?

Lutron Caséta vs Maestro: Which Should You Choose?

If you're shopping Lutron, "Caséta vs Maestro" is a slightly misleading comparison — because they aren't the same kind of product. Caséta is a connected smart-lighting system controlled by an app, a hub, and Pico remotes. Maestro is a family of in-wall dimmers, switches, and motion sensors that mostly run on their own at the wall — no app, no hub required.

So the real question isn't "which is better," it's "do you want a connected smart system, or do you want excellent in-wall controls?" This guide lays out the difference clearly so you can choose with confidence.

What is Lutron Caséta?

Caséta is Lutron's connected smart-lighting system for the home. The pieces work together:

  • Caséta Smart Hub — the control center. It uses Lutron's Clear Connect wireless technology to talk to your dimmers, switches, fan controls, Pico remotes, and sensors, and it's what lets you control everything from the Lutron app whether you're home or away.
  • Lutron app — control and schedules from your phone. A Caséta system supports up to 75 devices (using a Smart Hub and a repeater).
  • Pico remotes — wireless remotes that add control anywhere without running new wiring. Each Caséta switch/dimmer can pair to up to 10 Pico remotes, and one Pico can control multiple devices.
  • Integrations — the Smart Hub supports Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit, plus other connected-home platforms.

Range: the Smart Hub communicates with Caséta devices within about 30 ft. To cover a larger home, place Lutron's Caséta Smart Wireless Repeater (PD-REP) within 60 ft of the hub — it extends the system's total range to about 120 ft, for roughly 2,500 sq ft of whole-home coverage.

Caséta can be set up by a homeowner or installed by a pro. It's the right pick when you want app control, schedules, voice control, and a system that grows over time.

What is Lutron Maestro?

Maestro is Lutron's family of in-wall controls — dimmers, switches, fan controls, and motion sensors that mount in a standard wall box. The defining trait: standard Maestro is standalone. It works at the wall, on its own, with no hub and no app.

Key Maestro capabilities (verified on Lutron product/spec pages):

  • Dimmers and switches for a single room or circuit, including LED+ models for dimming LED, incandescent, and halogen loads.
  • Occupancy/vacancy sensor models — these turn lights on automatically when you enter (occupancy) or require a manual on but turn off automatically when the room empties (vacancy). The Maestro sensor dimmer offers adjustable timeout and sensitivity, and many models require no neutral wire (a ground connection can be used instead — confirm on the model's spec sheet).
  • Multi-location (3-way and beyond) — a Maestro sensor/dimmer pairs with Maestro companion dimmers (MA-R) so you can control the same lights from multiple switch locations. Per Lutron, only one in-wall sensor switch is installed in a multi-location setup; the rest are companions.

Important distinction — "Maestro Wireless": Lutron also makes Maestro Wireless RF controls (model numbers starting RRD-, e.g. RRD-6CL, RRD-6ND). These are components of Lutron's RadioRA 2, RA2 Select, and RadioRA 3 systems — not a standalone app-based smart system on their own. If someone says "Maestro works with an app," they're describing these RF models running inside a RadioRA system. Standard in-wall Maestro (model numbers like MS-, MSCL-, MA-) does not include app or wireless control by itself.

How to choose

Choose Caséta if you want:

  • App control, scheduling, and away-from-home control
  • Voice control (Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple Home)
  • Wireless Pico remotes you can move or add without rewiring
  • A system that scales — up to 75 devices (with a hub and repeater)

Choose Maestro if you want:

  • Excellent in-wall dimming and switching without an app or hub
  • Built-in motion/occupancy sensing for a specific room (great for bathrooms, laundry, closets, hallways)
  • A simple, reliable upgrade to existing wired switches
  • Multi-location dimming via companion dimmers, no network needed

Can you use both? Yes — many homes use Caséta where they want app/voice/schedules and Maestro sensors where they just want lights to turn off automatically. They don't have to talk to each other to coexist in the same house.

FAQ

Is Maestro the same as Caséta?
No. Caséta is a connected smart-lighting system (hub + app + Pico remotes). Maestro is a family of in-wall dimmers, switches, and sensors. Standard Maestro runs on its own without an app or hub.
Does Maestro have an app?
Standard in-wall Maestro (MS-/MSCL-/MA- models) does not. Lutron's Maestro Wireless RF models (RRD- model numbers) get app control only as part of a RadioRA 2 / RA2 Select / RadioRA 3 system, not on their own.
How many devices can Caséta control?
Up to 75 Caséta devices (using a Smart Hub and a repeater), managed via the Lutron app.
How do I control lights from more than one switch?
With Caséta, add a Pico remote (each device supports up to 10). With Maestro, add a Maestro companion dimmer (MA-R) for true multi-location wired dimming.
Does Caséta need Wi-Fi or a hub?
The Caséta Smart Hub is what enables app, voice, and remote-access control. The hub connects to your home network. To extend range in a larger home, add the Caséta Smart Wireless Repeater — placed within 60 ft of the hub, it extends the system's total range to about 120 ft (roughly 2,500 sq ft of coverage).
Does Maestro work with LED bulbs?
Yes — Maestro LED+ models are designed to dim LED, incandescent, and halogen loads. Confirm your specific bulb against the model's spec sheet, or ask us and we'll check compatibility for you.
