Wattstopper LMSW-105 Scene Switch: Specs, and What Replaced It

If you have an LMSW-105 on a drawing, in a panel schedule, or dead on a wall in a building you maintain, there are two things you need to know. The first is what it does. The second is that Legrand's own current datasheet titles the part "Discontinued", and names three different parts as its replacement, none of which is a one-for-one swap.

What the LMSW-105 is

Legrand's cut sheet describes it plainly:

"The LMSW-105 Digital Scene Switch is a low voltage device that sets and recalls preset lighting scenes and raises and lowers lighting levels. It is part of a Digital Lighting Management (DLM) system and controls loads connected to DLM room controllers by accessing four of the 16 scenes available in a DLM local network."

Three things in that sentence do a lot of work.

It is low voltage. The LMSW-105 does not switch a load. It runs on 24VDC drawn from the DLM local network and sends commands. Nothing happens without a room controller.

It accesses four of sixteen scenes. A DLM local network holds 16 scenes. This switch reaches four of them. Out of the box, Plug n' Go sets scene 1 to 100%, scene 2 to 75%, scene 3 to 50% and scene 4 to 25%.

The "5-button" name counts the paddle. The face has four scene buttons plus a raise/lower dimmer paddle. Legrand's product datasheet records the LMSW-105 as having 5 buttons and 0 rockers, and the cut sheet labels the paddle positions ON/Raise and OFF/Lower.

The cut sheet is explicit that the switch "operates on Class 2 power supplied to a DLM local network by one or more room controllers", and the installation sheet warns against installing it over a box carrying Class 1, Class 3 or power and lighting circuits.

Colour options published in the ordering table are white (-W), ivory (-I), light almond (-LA), gray (-G), black (-B) and red (-R), with a -U suffix denoting Buy American Act and Trade Agreement Act compliance on the white and ivory versions. Custom engraving is available and standard buttons can be replaced in the field.

The part is discontinued

Legrand's live product datasheet for LMSW-105-W, generated from its own catalogue, opens with this title line:

"Discontinued - Digital Scene Switch, 5-button w/IR, White"

and carries this field:

"Replaced by Part Number LMSW-222-W, LMSW-241-W, LMSW-250-W"

This is not limited to the scene switch. The whole LMSW-100 series is discontinued. Legrand's per-part datasheets map them as follows:

Legrand's current DLM Product Guide reinforces this: its Personal Controls table lists the LMSW-200 series switches and contains no LMSW-100 series switch anywhere.

One caveat on sourcing. The replacement list appears on the white datasheet. The ivory sheet, LMSW-105-I, is also titled Discontinued but carries no replacement field at all. Cite the -W sheet if you are documenting this for a client.

Which replacement do you actually want?

Legrand lists three replacements because none of them is a drop-in equivalent. The LMSW-200 series splits the old switch's job across different button and rocker layouts, and Legrand assigns each model a common application in its cut sheet ordering table:

If you are replacing an LMSW-105 and you want scene control, the LMSW-241 is the closest match. Four buttons plus a rocker maps directly onto the old four scene buttons plus dimmer paddle, and it is the model Legrand labels for multi-zone scene control.

The LMSW-250 is the trap. It has five buttons, so it looks like the natural successor by form factor, but Legrand labels it for multi-zone load control, not scene control. Matching the button count rather than the function is the easy mistake here.

Worth knowing: every LMSW-200 series switch is capable of scene control. The cut sheet states that buttons "can instead control one scene", and the DLM Product Guide marks scene control as available on all six models including the single-button LMSW-210. The application labels above describe what each model is shaped for, not a hard limit.

What carries over, and what to check

Electrically, the LMSW-200 series is the same animal. Input voltage is still 24VDC from the DLM local network, current draw is still 5mA, there are still 2 RJ45 ports, the network is still free-topology Cat 5e, the IR transceiver is retained, and the environmental range is unchanged at 32-131°F and 5-95% RH non-condensing, indoor only. Listings are still UL, cUL and FCC part 15, and the warranty is still five years. Plug n' Go and Push n' Learn both survive.

Physical differences are small. The new switches are slightly narrower and lighter than the LMSW-105, and colour naming changed: the new range is white (-W), light almond (-LA), ivory (-I), gray (-GRY), black (-BK), brown (-BR) and red (-RED), with -W-U denoting Buy American Act and Build America, Buy America Act compliance. Faceplates are still sold separately.

One thing we could not confirm, and will not claim. No Legrand document we could reach states whether an LMSW-200 series switch can be dropped into a DLM network built with LMSW-100 series switches. Both generations report the same platform, voltage, current draw, connector and topology, which is suggestive. But Legrand publishing a per-part replacement mapping rather than a blanket "drop-in replacement" statement is itself worth noticing. If a retrofit depends on mixed-generation operation, get it in writing from your Legrand rep before you order.

Is the Wattstopper LMSW-105 discontinued?

Yes. Legrand's own product datasheet for LMSW-105-W is titled "Discontinued - Digital Scene Switch, 5-button w/IR, White" and names LMSW-222-W, LMSW-241-W and LMSW-250-W as replacements. The entire LMSW-100 series is discontinued, and none of those models appears in Legrand's current DLM Product Guide.

What replaces the Wattstopper LMSW-105?

Legrand lists three replacements: LMSW-222, LMSW-241 and LMSW-250. For scene control, which is what the LMSW-105 did, the LMSW-241 is the closest match at four buttons plus one rocker; Legrand labels it for multi-zone scene control. The LMSW-250 matches the five-button form factor but is labelled for multi-zone load control instead.

How many scenes can the LMSW-105 control?

Four. Legrand's cut sheet states it works "by accessing four of the 16 scenes available in a DLM local network". Plug n' Go sets those four to 100%, 75%, 50% and 25% by default, and the levels are stored by the room controllers rather than by the switch.

Does the LMSW-105 need a room controller?

Yes. It is a low voltage device with no load-switching capability of its own. Legrand states it "operates on Class 2 power supplied to a DLM local network by one or more room controllers", and its power supply is listed as a Wattstopper room controller. On its own it does nothing.

What voltage and cable does the LMSW-105 use?

It draws 24VDC at 5mA from the DLM local network, and connects through two RJ45 ports using Cat 5e cable in a free-topology arrangement. It is a Class 2 device and must not be installed over a box carrying Class 1, Class 3 or power and lighting circuits.

Can an LMSW-200 series switch be used on an existing LMSW-100 series DLM network?

We could not confirm this from any Legrand document. Both generations share the same DLM wired platform, 24VDC supply, 5mA draw, RJ45 connection and free topology, but Legrand publishes a per-part replacement mapping rather than a general drop-in compatibility statement. Confirm with a Legrand representative before ordering for a mixed-generation retrofit.
