What both systems have in common

Wattstopper DLM: free-topology, plug-and-play

Wattstopper (a Legrand brand) built DLM as a distributed control system: each local network of room controllers, occupancy sensors, personal controls, and daylighting sensors configures itself from the bottom up. Wattstopper calls this free topology, meaning devices connect over low-voltage cable in whatever order or arrangement is convenient on site, daisy-chained or star-wired, up to 1,000 feet of cable, rather than a strict predetermined layout. Units ship pre-set for Plug n' Go, so a basic room network comes online without a laptop, software, or a commissioning pass.

To scale past a single room, the LMBC-300 Digital Network Bridge aggregates individual DLM local networks into a larger segment network, up to 96 DLM local networks per segment, which can then be handed to a DLM Segment Manager or, with a BACnet-compatible bridge, to a building automation system or browser-based interface.

nLight Wired: CAT-5e bus, control-zone architecture

nLight Wired runs on CAT-5e low-voltage cable using the TIA-485 communication standard, wired as a required daisy-chain (linear) topology rather than free topology. Devices on that bus form an nLight Control Zone, with up to 128 digital devices on a single zone and a maximum cable run of 1,500 feet of CAT-5e per zone, terminated to the T568B wiring standard. Like DLM, nLight's control logic is distributed: on/off, raise/lower, occupancy, and daylighting actions execute locally within the zone rather than round-tripping to a central panel. Zones are configured and managed through Acuity's SensorView web-based software, and nLight also integrates with Acuity's DALI-based DC2DC architecture for tunable-white and static-white LED systems.

Both systems are legitimate, widely specified networked lighting control platforms, and the right pick usually comes down to what the rest of the building is running rather than a feature gap. If the job already has DLM or nLight elsewhere in the building, matching the existing platform is almost always the right call for compatibility and a single training curve for the facilities team. On a new install, DLM's free topology and Plug n' Go setup tend to favor faster commissioning on small-to-midsize spaces without a dedicated controls software pass, while nLight's larger per-zone device count and SensorView platform suit larger zones and campuses already standardized on Acuity's ecosystem. For daylighting- and DALI-tunable-white-heavy projects, check whether the fixture line you are speccing has a stated integration path for one platform over the other before you lock the controls architecture.
