Choosing Color Temperature for Commercial Spaces
Color temperature is one of the first decisions on any commercial lighting job, and one of the easiest to get wrong across a whole building. Pick a number that clashes with the space and the room reads cold, or dingy, or mismatched next to the fixtures in the next bay over. This guide covers what the Kelvin numbers mean, what tends to work in each type of commercial space, and how to avoid the two mistakes that cause most callbacks: mixing color temperatures on one site, and confusing color temperature with color rendering.
What color temperature (CCT) means
Correlated color temperature (CCT) describes the appearance of a light source on a warm-to-cool scale, measured in kelvins (K). Lower numbers look warmer and more yellow. Higher numbers look cooler and more blue-white. It is a description of the light's tint, not its brightness and not how accurately it shows color.
The industry standardizes these numbers so a 4000K fixture from one brand should look like a 4000K fixture from another. Under ANSI C78.377, the nominal color temperatures defined for LED and solid-state products are 2200, 2500, 2700, 3000, 3500, 4000, 4500, 5000, 5700, and 6500 K. In plain terms:
- 2700K to 3000K (warm white): the look of incandescent and halogen. Relaxed and inviting.
- 3500K (neutral warm): a middle ground that reads clean without feeling clinical.
- 4000K (neutral / cool white): crisp and alert without going blue. The workhorse of commercial interiors.
- 5000K (daylight): bright and high-contrast, close to midday sun.
CCT is not CRI
These two specs get mixed up constantly, and they measure different things. CCT is the tint of the light. Color Rendering Index (CRI) is how faithfully that light shows the true color of what it lands on, scored 0 to 100.
You can have a 4000K fixture with a CRI of 70 and a 4000K fixture with a CRI of 90, and they will look noticeably different on merchandise, skin tones, and finishes. A common baseline for commercial work is CRI 80 or above, stepping up to 90 or above where color accuracy matters, such as retail displays, showrooms, medical exam areas, and galleries. Recommendations by commercial space
These are common industry starting points, not hard rules. The right answer depends on the brand image, the finishes in the room, and what the space is used for.
- Offices and professional spaces: 3500K to 4000K. Neutral white keeps people alert and reads professional without the cold cast of daylight temperatures.
- General retail and grocery: 3500K to 4000K, paired with a high CRI (90+) so products look accurate and fresh. Cooler neutral light reads as clean and well-stocked.
- Boutique, fashion, and hospitality: 2700K to 3000K. Warm light signals premium and comfortable, and flatters wood, fabric, and skin tones.

The practical hedge: CCT-selectable fixtures
Many commercial LED fixtures now ship as field-selectable CCT, sometimes called switchable or 3CCT/5CCT. A small switch on the fixture or driver lets the installer set the color temperature at install, often across choices like 3000K, 3500K, 4000K, 4500K, and 5000K.
For a distributor and a contractor, this solves real problems. You stock one part number instead of three, you can match an existing building without a special order, and you can correct a spec that reads wrong once the space is furnished. The one discipline it requires: set every fixture on a job to the same temperature and confirm it before closing up the ceiling, because a selectable fixture left on the wrong setting is the most common cause of a mismatched run.
What the codes actually say about CCT
For commercial general lighting, California Title 24 and comparable energy codes regulate lighting power (how many watts you are allowed) and controls (occupancy sensing, daylighting, demand response). They do not mandate a specific color temperature for general commercial lighting. In other words, CCT is a design and merchandising choice, not a compliance number, on most commercial projects.

Keeping color consistent across a building
Two fixtures labeled 4000K can still look slightly different if they come from different production runs or lower-tier product lines. Better products control this with tighter binning, often specified as a MacAdam step value (a lower step number, like 3-step, means tighter color consistency). When you are lighting a large open space or a storefront where fixtures sit side by side, spec a consistent product family and, where it matters visually, ask about the binning.
