Frequently Asked Questions
What is a photocell?
A photocell (photocontrol) is a light-sensitive switch that turns lighting on when ambient light drops at dusk and off when it rises at dawn. It automates outdoor, security, and area lighting so fixtures run only when needed.
What is a twist-lock (locking-type) photocontrol?
A twist-lock photocontrol plugs into a standardized locking receptacle on top of an outdoor fixture or pole, so it can be replaced without rewiring. Fixed and swivel-mount photocells are also available for direct wiring or surface mounting.
What is the difference between a photocell and a timer?
A photocell responds to actual light levels (dusk/dawn), while a time switch operates on a set schedule. Many outdoor applications combine them — or use an astronomic time switch — so lighting follows seasonal sunrise and sunset.
Where are photocells used?
Photocells are common on wall packs, area and parking-lot lights, building-mounted security fixtures, signage, and lighting control panels — anywhere automatic dusk-to-dawn operation is wanted.
